Modelia Days GOKOKUJI

東京の文京区音羽に位置する集合住宅。すぐ近くには江戸時代に幕府の祈願寺として建立された護国寺がある。都心でありながらも江戸時代の面影が感じられる。この街の一角にこの建物は建つ。
敷地周辺は細い道路を介して戸建て住宅が立ち並ぶため、近隣住民との視線交錯を避けるように開口を少しずつシフトさせた。この開口配列により光や風、風景を取り込みつつコンクリートという重たい素材に軽やかさを与えた。
開口は室内からは適度な大きさに感じさせながら、外部の周囲には傾斜面をつけることで、より軽い印象を与えることができる。また、その傾斜面には部分的に溶融亜鉛メッキ処理の金属板を貼り、内側では外壁面の四角形の余韻を残す木製フレームの棚を同位置に配置した。これにより内外の緩やかなつながりを試みた。

住戸内部は白い壁とコンクリート打放しだけで構成。無駄をそぎ落としたシンプルなディテールと仕様を徹底した。集合住宅に於ける最小限の形を追求し、モノに支配されない豊かさ、持たない生活の形、つまりライフスタイルと直結したミニマリズムを提案した。提供された最小限の要素は、住み手の自由な暮らし方のきっかけとなるだろう。例えば自立壁だけで仕切られた収納スペースはコンパクトな書斎にもなるし、広いコンクリートのキッチンカウンターはデスクなどにも利用できる。

この建物の開口部・棚などは、正方形を多用している。水平性・垂直性といった近代らしさの約束事から自由になったとき、正方形は最も純粋でプリミティブな開口の形ではないだろうか。

This apartment building is located in the Otowa district of Bunkyo ward in Tokyo. In close proximity to the Gokokuji temple, established during the Edo period (1603—1868), it was a historical place reserved for the prayer of the shogunate members. Though the neighbourhood is located in the centre of the city, it preserves traces of the area’s history. To avoid the direct lines of sight between the apartment buildings, to preserve the privacy of the residents of the single-family homes lining on the other side of the narrow street, the windows of the architectural project are shifted slightly off-centre. This arrangement of the windows welcomes the wind and natural light into the building, while also giving the heavy concrete a lighter feeling. The windows appear large from the interior — however, the exterior surface of the building, surrounding each window which slopes in at an angle, creates a recessed square-shaped frame that heightens the impression of ‘lightness.’ In addition, some of the sloped surfaces are covered with hot-dip galvanized steel sheets, while on the interior side, wooden frame-like shelves placed in the same position echo the rectangular shape of the recessed frames. This creates a smooth connection between the interior and exterior of the structure. The interior is designed with contrasting features of entirely white walls and unadorned raw concrete. The simplicity of design may be clearly observed as the architectural structure exhibits only necessary features — a clear concept of minimalism, seeking to find the beauty in the unornamented design: formation of the building in connection to a lifestyle unburdened by the superfluous material possessions. This may be seen in the minimalist elements of the apartment’s design: the storage space enclosed by freestanding walls that have the flexibility to transform into a compact office room, or in the spacious kitchen counter that could easily multi-serve as a desk — creating a freer lifestyle for the residents. The openings on the building’s facade consist of windows encompassed by wooden frame-like shelves, clearly taking the form of squares. Once freed from the modern societal conventions of possessing and adopt the lifestyle of ‘’less is more,” the project demonstrates an openness to the innovative design concept that doesn’t dictate the window to follow a vertical or a horizontal format — but rather adopt a square form, which may be the purest and most primitive shape for an opening.
